Mani Monday #6: Grapes!

I have more shades of purple nail polish than five nail salons combined (an ombre mani may be in my future...). So obviously when I saw this one on Julep's website, I had to have it. It's a really nice grape shade of purple and it looks even better in person. Even though it's spring and I should start dusting off my lighter shades, I couldn't resist one more dark manicure. (Who am I kidding -- I'll have a ton more dark manicures before fall).

What I'm Watching #3: The Mysteries of Laura

Have you been watching The Mysteries of Laura on NBC? It's one of the new shows of the 2014-2015 season, and it stars Debra Messing, Josh Lucas, Laz Alonso, and Janina Gavankar. Like Hawaii Five-0, it's a cop show. But it's a comedic one. I didn't expect to have strong feelings about it, but I actually really like it. It might be one of my favorite shows this season.

My Favorite Things: Long Necklaces

Jewelry has always been a struggle for me. I love it, but for some reason I don't frequently wear it. I've been working hard to change that recently, and in that process I've learned that I love long necklaces. They're so easy! They don't require much thought, yet they add so much to an outfit. And considering I tend to wear a lot of all black, a long necklace adds a nice pop.

As I work to grow my (currently modest) collection of long necklaces, I wanted to share some of my favorite acquisitions with you.

Mani Monday #5: Lady Luster

This week's mani is fancier than usual, and it was done by Lindsay from Shrimp Salad Circus using her at-home gel manicure kit (and her ability to freehand French tips). This was my second experience using an at-home gel kit, and I think I like it. These Sally Hansen colors look and feel like salon gel polish, and if you don't pick at your nail polish like I do, I think it'll last just as long, too.

My only hesitation in buying my own kit is that I've spent so long acquiring my epic nail polish collection and I can't fathom the idea of starting over with gel colors. But if I can keep this polish on for more than a week, I might reconsider my stance.

As an aside, "Lady Luster" is a fantastic nail polish name, and just an overall great phrase. You'd be surprised how often I've managed to fit it into conversations over the past few days. Make your Monday a little more exciting and try to use "lady luster" in a work conversation. If anything, you'll entertain yourself. :)

What I’m Watching #2: Hawaii Five-0

People tend to be surprised to learn I watch this show. I guess it's not a staple among my TV-watching friends. If you're not familiar with it, it’s your standard cop show—someone is murdered at the beginning and the killer is caught by the end. But this one has the added bonus of being set in Hawaii so the scenery is great. It also stars Alex O’Loughlin. If you don’t know who he is, do yourself a favor and Google Image search him. You’ll thank me later.

10 Shelving Ideas For Your Home

I love imagining the kinds of things I'll have in my future home. I bring some of my ideas to life in my current apartment, but since I'm renting, I'm trying to hold off on any big projects/purchases until I own a place. So, for now, I continue to pin!

I've been pretty interested in shelving lately (thanks again to that HGTV obsession I mentioned before). I could really use some more shelving now to help keep myself organized (and to display pretty things, of course), so I've been looking around. Here are some of the ones that I've really liked recently.

Mani Monday #4: Feeling Matte

This week's nail color is another one of my recent Julep purchases. Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about it. In its original form, it's a blueish-purple with shimmer in it, and I liked it and disliked it at the same time (which clearly makes no sense). I decided to put a matte top coat on it (as pictured above) to see if that helped, and I still couldn't decide.

The jury is still out on this one. I may try it again in a few months to see if I have a more concrete opinion then. For now, I'm interested what you think of this color. Take a look at the pictures of it on Julep's website too because it looks completely different.

7 Desserts for St. Patrick's Day

St. Paddy's Day is coming up next week! I'm not usually a big celebrator of this holiday -- I'll be impressed if I to remember to wear green -- but I love a good opportunity to be festive! There are so many ways to take part in St. Patrick's Day, from crafts to costumes to treats. I decided to go the treats route and compiled 7 St. Patrick's Day treats that you can make for your celebration.

Adventures in Baking: Fudgy Brownies

Sometimes, you just need a brownie. No? Just me? Last Thursday I was really craving brownies, but it happened to be in the middle of a snowstorm and I was missing some key ingredients. But I made it happen on Friday.

I got this recipe from the same blogger who created those amazing Nutella stuffed sugar cookies, and I can assure you she knows what she's doing with these magical desserts. Before Friday, all of my brownie-making experiences were of the boxed variety, but these have changed my life.

Mani Monday #3: Frozen

You see that clean, white background? Yeah, that's snow. And I'm kind of tired of it. Someone needs to let mother nature know it's March. Thankfully, this week is supposed to be warmer. While I'm not ready for gross summer heat, I wouldn't mind lighter jackets and less no snow.

But enough about the weather. Last week, I received two separate Julep shipments on the same day. It was nail polish heaven and basically Christmas. This is one of those colors -- I was overwhelmed by the options and struggled to choose, but for some reason, the light blue shade was really speaking to me. The picture doesn't do it justice. It's such a nice shade and it has some shimmer to it. It also kind of reminds me of Frozen, so it seemed fitting for a snow day.

I also decided it was extremely important to go outside in the snow in my pajamas to take this picture. #Priorities, am I right?

8 Pops of Color for Your Home

I've been watching a lot of HGTV lately, and I mean A LOT. But it's been educational: I want a house so I can decorate it; I have a lot of opinions on bathrooms and kitchens; light fixtures can really make or break a space; home owners can be very annoying; and I love a good pop of color.

I spent an alarming amount of time on Pinterest and found tons of pops of color that I love. I managed to narrow it down to eight that inspire the house I own in my head.

Mani Monday #2: Pop of Pink

What better way to kick off the week than with a bright pop of pink? I decided it's too soon to go full neon with my nails considering there's still snow on the ground, and I wanted to test out my new dark grey shade from Zoya, so this is the compromise I came up with!

I really like Zoya nail polish. If you haven't tried the brand out yet, I recommend it. Their polish is toxin-free, and they also run some pretty great promotions from time to time that make it very affordable. I've had a hard time finding a dark grey shade that I really like, but this one is pretty good. I'm not convinced it's "the one" (yeah, I take my nail polish seriously), but it's a solid contender. If you have other dark grey recommendations, send them my way please!
